Kato has announced its long hinted new locomotive for N scale. Kato will be producing the SDP40F in Amtrak Phase I and Phase II paint. The model is expected in late spring 2016. With this and the previously announced ACS-64 locomotive, Kato has covered the most prominent motive power stretching the entirety of Amtrak’s existence.
The SDP40F was the first locomotives built specifically for Amtrak. They were based off the SD40-2 but modified with a higher top speed and with steam generators for passenger service. Some saw later life in freight service and commuter rail services such as Chicago’s Metra.
