Prototype

36′ double sheathed wood boxcars with truss rods were built before and after the turn of the 20th Century.  Kenneth L. Anthony identified two similar classes of cars: Santa Fe’s class BX-K, of which 2500 cars were built in 1902, and a series of Illinois Central built 1891-1892 era.  Information about the Santa Fe cars can be found in Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference Series – Vol 4.  Information and photos of the Illinois Central cars can be found in Railroad Car Journal No. 1 (Published August 1971)

N Scale Models

Model Die Casting/Roundhouse Products originally released these models as their 36′ “Old Time” boxcars.  Later, these cars became part of Athearn’s line.  The cars feature all wood double sheathed construction, including a wood roof, wood ends, wood underframe with truss rods, and arch bar trucks.  Many colorful “Billboard” schemes have been offered, with a sampling pictured here.
