UP 9000-9014 Series:

Kato (City of Los Angeles – 2011)
Union Pacific 9003

Prototype

After being ordered in 1954, Union Pacific took delivery of fifteen American Car & Foundry Plan 76-1938 (Lot 4096) Dome Observations in 1955.  They were delivered in UP’s Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey.  The trucks were painted Grey upon delivery, but the bearing caps appeared to be painted silver to indicate roller bearings.  Of the fifteen cars, five were assigned to the City of Los Angeles, five to the City of Portland, and five to the Challenger.  They didn’t remain in their original configuration long, as the UP decided to convert them to mid-train service in late-1956.  The neon drumhead and tail and marker lights were removed, the rear door changed out, and the rear facing lounge windows were plated over. A standard diaphragm was mounted to the still rounded off observation end.

N Scale Models

In April 2011, Kato released the 11-car City of Los Angeles set which included a single Dome Lounge 9003.  It featured an edge light “neon” tail sign for the Domeliner City of Lost Angeles.  This car is pictured here.

Other Schemes

These cars were only painted in UP’s Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey.  The 15 cars were numbered 9000-9014.

It would not be difficult to model a converted mid-train lounge from the Kato model for Cities trains post 1956. Two photos taken by Marshall Skibbe in the Milwaukee Road’s Western Ave Yard in Chicago are included here.  They show the Dome Lounges after conversion to mid-train service.
