Kato (City of Los Angeles – 2011)
Union Pacific Placid Valley

Prototype

After being ordered in 1954, Union Pacific took delivery of ten Pullman-Standard Plan 4198 (Lot 6953) 11 Double Bedroom cars in March and April of 1956. They were delivered in UP’s Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey. The 41-CUDO-11 trucks were painted Grey upon delivery.  The cars were assigned to various Overland Route trains.  All 10 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971.

N Scale Models

In April 2011, Kato released the 11-car City of Los Angeles set which included a single Placid series sleeper, Placid Valley. This car is pictured here.

Other Schemes

While these cars were only painted in UP’s Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey, the trucks could be either grey (as-delivered) or silver (~1957).  The 10 cars were named Placid Bay, Placid Harbor, Placid Haven, Placid Lake, Placid Meadow, Placid Scene, Placid Sea, Placid Vale, Placid Valley, and Placid Waters.
