UP “City” Series:
Kato (City of Los Angeles – 2011)
Union Pacific “Cheyenne”
After being ordered in 1954, Union Pacific took delivery of ten Pullman-Standard Plan 4199 (Lot 6959) 5-Bedroom Buffet Lounge cars in April of 1956. They were delivered in UP’s Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey. The 41-CUDO-11 trucks were painted Grey upon delivery. The lounge section in these cars was trimmed in natural redwood paneling, leading to an unofficial nickname among railroad employees as the “Redwood Cars”. Half of the cars were assigned to the City of Los Angeles, and the other half to the City of Portland. They remained in their original configuration until 1965, at which time 7 were convereted to 11 bedroom sleepers (Star series)and 3 were used in the business car fleet. The 7 converted cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971.
